Tianguismanalco, Puebla is a large orderly Nahua town. Nahua is spoken by many people both at home and the in street. The tapestry embroidered blouses are now worn only by the older generations in a very limited way. Bob Freund 6/25/2005 For more information contact: info@mexicantextiles.com

During the procession it was interesting to see that the young people were responsible for carrying the over 20 images, even young teenage girls were part of it. Many girls were assisted when the procession stopped by men who lifted to images of their shoulders. As is customary they also rotated the people that carry the images, however the largest of San Juan was carried by adult men, because of the weight, I am sure. Women came out of their homes and spread flower petals on the street where the procession was to pass. This can be seen in the last image on the bottom row. The PAN political party is a conservative party with roots in the Catholic Church and so it is no surprise that there are paintings o the Virgin of Guadalupe painted on buildings. I actually saw a number of different ones painted on the side of buildings as we moved through town in the procession. The town is on the lower slopes of the volcano and although it was cloud covered the massive size is clearly evident by signs indicating the evacuation route for the town. |
