Xicalxochico is a small community in the heart of the Xochitlan municipality. The town has recently been paved and the civil center is orderly and neat. When we arrive the town leader greeted us and made an announcement over the town loud speaker in Nahua that we were there. Almost immediately a woman showed up with blouses and other goods. The Ixtle bag is worn by most men who work in the fields. What was interesting here is the woman had made some modern blouses out of the traditional types. The beaded sleeveless blouse was nice as was the blouse with a tab and pickets. The communities in many indigenous villages are struggling for ways to adapt the traditional craft to new markets.
