San Gregorio – This larger village has a number of generation that continue to wear traditional dress. After a bit of investigating the women started to show me very different costumes. The one pictured here is now no longer in use and the quechquemitl is unique in the region. The 3 meter white wrap skirt, broad black belt and the wool quechquemitl are very interesting. While I was there two quechquemitls were shown to me. They were very similar in design except for the placement of the patterns on the body of the piece. Other who have seen this now extinct garment have commented on how it is similar to the Pantepec Puebla quechquemitl now also extinct. He broad black belt is similar to the Tepehua belt worn in Huehuetla except it has a braided finish instead of the tied figures in the Tepehua belt.

After photographing this wonderful quechquemitl they offered to sell it to me. This is the essence of my work, to preserve the memory textile of Mexico and now this piece will be protected and eventually donated to a museum. It does raise more questions than answers about the style and use of quechquemitls in the region, including Pantepec.
