Prayer at festival
The town of San Mateo Tlacotepec is one of many Totonaca communities in the Ahuacatlan district. The town festial was on Dec 13 this year (2007). Traditional costume is alive and well here as you can see from the photos. There was also an interesting and disappointing cultural phenomenon Los Cholos, these are young men and women that leave the village to work in Mexico City or the US and return with a gang like mentality and often dress in punk or gang clothing. They seem to discount indigenous culture and act like bad role models for the younger kids in the villages.
