The towns name is derived from the Nahua tlaquiloa (to write) and tepetl (mountain). The town sits on the high side of a mountain which gives it an impressive view from a look out above the town. On my last visit the lookout had been blown away by one of the reoccurring hurricanes that come up from the Gulf of Mexico. However the concrete pad where the lookout once stood is still there.

Access to most of the towns throughout the municipality is by dirt road. There is one bridge near San Pedro Petlacotla that gives access directly to the highway that runs from Tulancingo Hidalgo to Poza Rica Veracruz.
