San Juan Colorado, Oaxaca is a Mixtec village with a large population of weavers. The huipil is no longer worn however many different types of textile including huipil, napkin, tablecloths, shoulder bags, head cloths and belts are still woven there.11/15/2005For more information contact:info@mexicantextiles.com Return to Coastal Mixtec home page

San Juan Colorado recently has been reaching out to sell their weavings and I have seen them at a number of handicraft fairs and at the Popular Cultures Museum in Mexico City. My brief visit to the town in 1985 confirmed that although there are many weavers there the use of the traditional dress is all but gone. The wrap skirt can be seen from time to time. there are also mask weavers in the town. Additional examples of the town’s huipil from the collection of Elwell / Aleto are included in this gallery.
