Helicotla, Magdalena, Veracruz is a Nahuatl speaking town close to the municipal capital of Magdalena. The well maintained streets and orderly appearance is a welcome site among so many poor Mexican towns. From where we parked, we didn’t have to walk more than 25 feet to find the first person in costume. The son was there and had just returned from working in the US and had his pickup truck to prove it, he was enthusiastic about the project and convinced his mother to participate. Many people from this region go to work in the US since jobs are very scarce here and coffee prices have fallen.
The blouse is the traditional short sleeved lace adorned blouse worn in this and other region, it does not sport the large lace collar, the belt is of store bought material about 10 feet long and a black wrap skirt. The wrap skirt at one time was wool but has been replaced in almost all communities with a blended material most commonly wool – poly. Skirt is folded with pleats in the front and the sash is wrapped arounf the waits and tied in the back to form a bow.
