Tonalixco, Xoxocotla, Veracruz is a small Nahua community on the outskirts of Xoxcotla. Traditional dress is all but extinct here. There are people in the comunity that spin and weave wool garments. and crafts on backstrap looms.

Enjoying the best home made tortilla. If you ever had one the cardboard they serve in the US would be a thing of the past.

Tonalixco mean – Town in front of the sun – The village leader and the women who had formed a collective to farm fish took us down into a hidden valley to show us the fish farm. There were some small problems with the farm and Tony from Amatitla gave them some advice, like water level aeration and water speed.
They them took us up to a home were they were making breakfast on a hearth located in the center of the room, mostly making a large quantity of tortillas. They invited us to have breakfast; mmmm well I must have eaten about a dozen of the tortillas with salsa and salt. During that time a number of women came in the show me their goods and looms. After eating out fill of tortillas we went to visit women who had a loom and was working it.
In addition to the ponchos they also weave blankets on the blackstrap loom which are much wider than an example of that loom can be seen in the second row of photos.
As we walked out of the town our guide took us over to a tree and explained that the small cone like fruit of this tree is used to calm pain from a tooth ache. He put one in his mouth telling us it was to prove it was not poison… I crunched down on one and sure enough my mouth went numb.
