Pie del Cerro, Hidalgo is an Otomi village near Tutotepec. Traditional dress a simple smocked blouse and skirt made from commercial material, adorned with lace. I was there during Carnival 2/07. Some women wore embroidered blouses under the blouse. ©Robert E. Freund 3/7/2007

The visit to Pie del Cerro followed the cultural administrator in San Bartolo. The Carnival celebration was just getting underway, the “carniveleros” dress as “Viejo’s” there seem to be two types the fuzzy ones and mariachis. In the evening, they dance in a whirling dervish style. The mayordomo of the festival invited me to join them and they had delicious hand made tortillas and mole.

The costume here is a simple pleated skirt and blouse and the ever present apron. I did notice a few elderly women wearing an embroidered blouse under the overblouse. In the second photo on the top row the satin dress is often used during festival.
