During the first few days in the sierra Norte of Puebla, I began a methodical course of documentation. Planning each municipality to visit and document, during this process I found that Zongozotla was having its festival on Dec 8th , well it was Dec 8th at 11 am and , bam , out the door to Zongozotla. The town is its own municipality, located on top of a mountain, it has no other towns associated with it. The festival was just getting under way and this gallery and the gallery specifically on the festival are the results.

The Totonacan peoples have been fairly isolated until recently and with the advent of road building these villages are much easier to get to and to getaway from. I say that because the younger generation has no interest in farming at the subsistence level and migrate to Mexico City or the US.

The Totonacan women here wear the traditional embroidered or creel blouse, the wide Totonacan belt, white skirt, either a wrap skirt or a home made skirt with machine designs and pleats. The Quechquemitl is interesting because this was the first time I saw women wearing colored lace quechquemitls. In this town I didn’t see any embroidered quechquemitls.
