Ocotlan is a large traditional district located 32 miles west of Oaxaca City, the area is primarily flat and semi arid with a large ridge of mountains to the south. There are many villages that still retain Zapotec language and customs. The Zapotec language spoken there is fading, however the customs are still strong.

During the early 1970's I worked and lived there as a handicrafts buyer, and eventually had a cottage industry with over 500 embroiderers working in thier homes on all sorts of clothing and embroiderd objects.

The Ocotlan district is rich in traditions and customs, not to mention the best enpanadas and mole and mezcal in Mexico. The buttons above and the image to the right show only a part of the amazing handicrafts from this district.
