Zacatepec, Oaxaca is a town a unique mens costume has survived. The small embroidered figures and animal have spawned a rich handicraft industry which uses these designs to create a broad variety of textile handicrafts. The town of Zacatepec is one of the last towns in Oaxaca where some men wear the traditional costume. There are two example of the costume in the collection plus a women huipil. The mens costume was generally hand woven muslin and then embroidered. The womens costume is hand woven on a backstrap loom with brocade and then embroidered. There are many examples in the markets around Oaxaca of the use of the Zacatepec designs in all sorts of textile crafts. I dropped in a picture of me from 10 years ago, just in case anyone wonders what I used to look like.
