Huautla is a municipal capital in the Huasteca region of Hidalgo. Certain abuelas (grandmothers) still wear traditional dress. Many of the surrounding towns maintain textile traditions. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the blouse from Huautla.

The paved road up to the town is in good condition (2/05). The recently paved streets are a sign that the progress that has happened has arrived here too. The festival of Carnival the week before lent starts culminates on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. They had parades and bands playing, the villages surrounding came "painted" as is a custom in many Nahua towns. There was a contest for the best-painted dancers, a queen and king.
