Ejido San Mateo is a small Otomi community in the Sierra of Hidalgo. There is one person that still wears traditional costume. When this woman is gone 5000 years of indigenous dress will have disappeared in this village. Bob Freund10/26/2006

The town is rather small, probably 250 people. The subject was wearing the purple blouse when I arrived. It is almost always the same story. First convince the daughter, then the grandmother (she doesn’t speak Spanish) and then the grand children. I was helped in this by Flor from the textile collective in El Grande, a nearby town.

In the first images the daughter is embroidering a circular table cloth.
