San Antonino is a traditional Zapotec town where many fine blouses and dresses were produced. While it is not the only town to produces these blouse is actually part traditional costume there. This dress is on of the best known in Mexico. The original form is an embroidered blouse worn under the over blouse , as seen in the first image. During the 1970´s these blouses became Maxi and regular dress known as the Wedding dress there are still women in the village that wear this blouse in the traditional way. White on black was one of the more difficult to embroidered, due to the difficulty of seeing the hand drawn embroidery design. The design was usually done in grease pencil which produced a larger than normal embroidery pattern. ( see San Pedro Martir) |
Classic commercial dress with pansies on the yoke and roses on the randa . This type of mis-match happens when large numbers of pieces are brought together at the wholesalers for final assembly. |
This is a fine example of the traditional embroidery, notice that the roses throughout the dress are consistent and the colors are matched, it is short sleeve with a well done smocking (hazme si puedes) of the wedding party. |
